5 things to see and do in the King Country

Our team has spent a good amount of time getting out and about around the region, and as locals there are so many activities and places we would recommend checking out. Here’s just a few of our favourite things to do in the King Country.
Waitomo Caves
It would be wrong to not start with this world-renowned destination! The perfect location for a family fun day out – with activities that everyone will enjoy. From exploring the magical glowworm caves to action packed black water rafting, you’re bound to have a blast at Waitomo Caves.
Marokopa Falls Walk
We love the tiny coastal community of Marokopa, and the Marokopa Falls Walk is a great short track that takes you through the tawa and nikau forest down to the viewing platform –with a spectacular view of the falls. The walk itself takes around 30 – 40 minutes return and is not one to missed!
For a full day out you could also combine this walk with Mangapohue Natural Bridge Walk and Piripiri Cave Walk for a scenic drive from Waitomo to Marokopa.
Otorohanga Kiwi House
Check out our favourite elusive bird at the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park. This awesome experience gives visitors the chance to see native animals, like the Kiwi, up close & personal. You can also wander around the park and hear from the knowledgeable keepers, learning about the animals and their conservation efforts.
Hairy Feet Waitomo
This scenic film location tour is perfect for all the Lord of Rings and Hobbit fans out there! You will be taken on a guided tour through the stunning Mangaotaki Valley farm, near the village of Piopio, which featured extensively in The Hobbit.
